Friday Sermon: The virtue of Dhu al-Qa'dah, the eleventh month in the Islamic calendar.

Sermon I

All praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, who commands us to constantly uphold taqwa (God-consciousness) in our lives. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad.

Dear Muslim brothers and sisters, may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.

Today, on this blessed Friday, we find ourselves in the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah. It is a convergence of two noble occasions—a Friday and the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah. We are familiar with the virtues of Fridays, as we have come across numerous narrations highlighting the excellence of this blessed day. Among these narrations, Imam Muslim reports from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On this day, Adam was created, entered Paradise, and was expelled from it. And the Day of Judgment will not occur except on a Friday." (Narrated by Muslim)

And other evidence that mentions the virtues of this best day. However, few among us are aware of the virtues of the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah, perhaps because it occurs only once a year, or perhaps because it is rarely discussed by preachers and khateebs, or perhaps because this month is not like Ramadan, which is eagerly anticipated by Muslims, leading them to make preparations such as studying the virtues and rules surrounding Ramadan.

Fellow Friday congregation,

On this occasion, allow me, as the khateeb, to mention the virtues and rules regarding the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah in which we currently find ourselves.

The month of Dhu al-Qa'dah is one of the sacred months, which means it is a month of sanctity and respect. During this sacred month, we are strictly prohibited from committing acts of disobedience, unlike other months, and the rewards for doing good deeds are greater in this honored month.

Allah Almighty says,

"Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him]." (Quran, Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36)

These months are called sacred because during them, disobedience and sins are strictly prohibited. This is the statement of Sheikh Abdurrahman bin Nashir As-Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him) in his tafsir (exegesis).

Al-Qadi Abu Ya'la (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "They are called sacred months for two reasons:
1- During these months, various forms of killing are forbidden. Even the people of the pre-Islamic period recognized this.
2- During these months, the prohibition of committing sinful acts is emphasized more than in other months due to their sanctity. Additionally, it is an excellent time to engage in acts of obedience." (Refer to Zaadul Masiir, tafsir of Surah At-Tawbah, verse 36)

Regarding the four mentioned months, including the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah, it has been mentioned in a hadith narrated by Abu Bakrah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

"Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [since] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion. So, do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him]." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

Ibn Abbas said, "Allah has designated these four months as sacred months, considered as holy months. Committing sins during these months will incur greater punishment, while righteous deeds performed during this time will earn more rewards." (Latho-if Al Ma'arif, 207)

May Allah ease our path to perform good deeds in the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah and protect us from committing sins. Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds.

"By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience."
