5-Minute Eid al-Adha Sermon: The Two Dimensions of Worship in Sacrifice

This Eid al-Adha sermon script invites the audience to enhance their vertical and horizontal worship. Through this, it is hoped that we all can maximize ourselves in practicing it during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Sermon I

Esteemed congregation of Eid al-Adha prayer, may the mercy of Allah be upon you. Allah SWT states in the Quran, Surah Al-Kawthar, verses 1-3:

Translation: "Indeed, We have granted you abundant blessings. So establish prayer for your Lord and sacrifice. Indeed, it is your enemies who are without descendants (cut off from Allah's mercy)."

Translation: This verse serves as a reflection for us, highlighting the countless blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us, which we cannot possibly enumerate. These blessings should be acknowledged and expressed through our worship, drawing ourselves closer to Allah. Drawing near to Allah can be achieved through the performance of prayer and the sacrifice of animals during Eid al-Adha, as emphasized in the second verse of this surah.

Translation: Besides being a vertical act of worship, drawing closer to Allah, the act of sacrifice (kurban) also holds a horizontal or social dimension, which is sharing one's blessings with others. Just as we bring happiness to others through giving Zakat during Eid al-Fitr, it is now time to bring joy to others through the act of sacrifice during Eid al-Adha. Especially in the current Covid-19 pandemic, where many people are facing economic hardships, it is our duty to share and support one another. If the community is in greater need of assistance beyond the provision of sacrificial meat, it would be commendable to redirect our sacrificial funds to help alleviate the impact of this pandemic. May we, as the audience of this Eid al-Adha prayer, have social awareness and the ability to bring great benefits to those around us, for the best among humans are those who benefit others. Amen.
